Virgil Floyd Raburn Obituary (1949

Virgil Floyd Raburn, 68, of Bear Creek, entered into rest on Friday, November 9, 2018 at his home surrounded by loved ones. Mr. Raburn was born on November 21, 1949, in Bear Creek. Virgil was a member of Pleasant Ridge Freewill Baptist Church for 9 years, where he was a Sunday school teacher. He was a 1969 graduate of Phillips High School, 1971 graduate of Northwest Alabama State Junior College with a Associates in Arts Degree, and 1975 graduate of The University of Alabama with a Master of Arts Degree. Virgil retired from Phillips High School after 23 years as a Special Education Teacher, Assistant Principle, and bus driver. After retirement, he then taught 5 years as a Special Education Teacher at Hatley School in Mississippi and was a host to numerous foreign exchange students. Also, during his teaching career he was a farmer for 35 years. Virgil was a Master Masons throughout the globe. He enjoyed reading, traveling, carpentry work, and he loved to spend time with his family. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 6pm-8pm at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville. Services will be held at 1pm on Monday, November 12, 2018 at Pleasant Ridge Freewill Baptist Church in Hamilton, where he will lie in state from 12pm-1pm. Brother Michael Frederick will officiate. Burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery in Hackleburg. Virgil is survived by his wife of 11 years and 10 months, Alona Versales Raburn; son, Alton Raburn; mother, Beatrice Loveless Raburn; brother, Dan Raburn; nephew, Tyrel Raburn; niece, Bethany and her husband Ian Rowson; and great nephews, Braxton McMickin, and Oscar Rowson. He was preceded in death by his father, Nolen Raburn.
