Harvest, Alabama
Michelle Suzanne Alford (née Ward), age 63, of Houston, Alabama, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family following a courageous battle with metastatic lung cancer.
Born in Rockford, Illinois, on March 25, 1963, Michelle spent her youth between Rockford and Bear Creek, Alabama. A woman of steadfast devotion and service, she proudly retired from service in the United States Army after 23 years, completing six years of active duty in her early adulthood before answering the call to serve an additional 17 years later in life.
Throughout her civilian career, Michelle brought warmth, compassion, and a tireless work ethic to every role she held. Whether assisting patients as a pharmacy technician, supporting clients at the Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center, working in manufacturing at Lippert Components, or greeting neighbors as a friendly cashier at Gateway Foodland, she possessed a rare gift for human connection. A true people person, Michelle had an effortless ability to strike up a conversation with any stranger and turn them into a lifelong friend.
Above all her accomplishments, Michelle found her greatest joy in her family. She cherished time spent with her children and grandchildren, took immense pride in pampering herself with manicures and pedicures, and lovingly cared for her faithful cats and dog.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Johnny Alford; her son, Kyle Alford; her parents, Jim Ward and Francis Shirley; stepfathers Jim Poston and Jimmie Shirley; brother David Poston; and sister Robyn Ward.
Michelle’s memory and legacy of love will be forever cherished by her surviving family: her son, Jacob Alford and his wife Elishia; her daughter, Amelia Millwood and husband Lawrence; her beloved grandsons, Fisher and Dalton; and granddaughter Kayelee. She is also survived by stepmother Margaret Ward; her sisters, Kim Ward, Jamie Benford, and Alitia Stark; her brother, Andy Cheatham; as well as extended family members, fellow veterans, and countless dear friends.
To honor and celebrate Michelle’s life and service, visitation will be Monday, August 24, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home in Double Springs, where the funeral will also be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Alford Family Cemetery in Houston, Alabama.
